About Us

Finding Inspiration in Every Turn

The Buis Book Foundation (BBF) was created in 2021 by Dr. Kirk Buis, who taught high school for thirty years, and his family, who are all lifelong readers.

During the last few years of teaching, Dr. Buis gave his 10th grade students a standardized reading test on the first day of school and learned that their average reading level was on the 7th grade, which meant that half of his 10th grade students were reading on a 4th, 5th or 6th grade level. This inspired the formation of the BBF, which partners with Title 1 elementary schools and provides free books to students to improve their literacy level.

The BBF now partners with three schools (Kimberly and Tuskegee Airmen Academy in Atlanta Public Schools and Britt in Gwinnett County Public Schools) and has donated thousands of books to thousands of students.

Our Story

Many organizations are involved with raising children's literacy. The Buis Book Foundation has four specific differences that raise its effort and make the most of your financial contributions.

First, offering students a choice of books is critical to encourage them to read. At each of its giveaways, the BBF spreads thousands of books on tables and lets the children select their own books. This choice greatly multiplies the chance that the books will actually be read by the children, rather than becoming paperweights.

Second, everyone at the BBF is a volunteer. No one is paid for their philanthropic commitment.

Third, the foundation does not maintain large warehouse or storage space. Books are shipped or driven directly to the schools, allowing for financial accountability.

Fourth, we return to the same schools year-after-year. This is what truly improves students' literacy abilities. We don't give them books once; we give them books as they grow, throughout their elementary school experience.

100% of financial donations go directly toward books for children.
